Seems as if our warm January has turned into cold February. I sure hope not, as our “I Love to Read” theme this year is “Dive into Reading”. The opening assembly may have included some flippers!! There will be many great activities all month along with a “Read at the Beach” day. We will need a large imagination to pull that off!
We hope to move the addition of the Meteor play structure from our imagination to our playground this year. We will continue our fundraising with a Niakwa pizza fundraiser this month in our efforts to complete this project. More information will be provided next week. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2023-2024 OPENS JANUARY 5th
Kindergarten registration for the 2023-2024 school year will open on January 5 2023. To be eligible, children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2023. The registration process will take place online at www.hsd.ca. If you do not have access to the Internet, please visit the school office and we can assist you in completing the registration on a school computer.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to register their children soon after registration opens in January. Early registration will assist us in preparation and planning for the upcoming school year. Registering before March 1, 2023, will ensure there is sufficient time for school appointments and provide parents/guardians with the opportunity to participate in Kindergarten orientation activities. As educators, we have a responsibility to model caring for others as one of our basic psychological needs. As we deliberately put energy into this moral purpose, our students can learn and grow in this domain. This modelling has come alive in our continued support of sponsoring children’s education in Liberia.
“We do not merely tell them (students) to care and give them texts to read on the subject, we demonstrate our caring in our relations with them.” (Nel Noddings 1998)
If we want students to care for each other, it makes sense to give them an opportunity to put this into practice. One way we do this at MES is through our continued partnership with Provision of Hope. Despite the unpredictable nature of this school year, we are once again grateful to our greater school community for the unwavering support of this valuable, worthwhile project. Given the success of this year’s efforts, we are now ready to increase the number of students we support in Liberia. A big thank you to our MES community for the care you have extended to our extra “classroom.”

Mitchell Elementary School & Community has outdone itself again!
The care and compassion that was displayed today by our MES students, staff and community for students needing help in Liberia will make a difference in so many lives!
Over $12,000 has been generously donated!
This means we are able to support our 13 students for another year and add new students who need help. In addition, we are exploring options on how the rest of the funds will be used for helping children and families in Liberia. Stay tuned for more information.

It’s funny how quickly we adjust to goodness and start taking things for granted; this has been one of the mildest springs on record and yet I find myself alarmed when the temperature drops below zero. Here at MES we continue to appreciate our in-person learning environment, and are grateful for all of the community support in these unusual times.
May is nutrition month, fall 2021 Kindergarten welcome, Jump Rope for Heart, and fall planning month. While things will look different, and may even change from the writing of this article to hitting send on the email, we will continue to collaborate both in school and out, engage with our learning partnerships, and do everything we can so that MES really is, “a great place to grow!”
